What is STAR?

STAR (Steuben Takes a Ride) is a public transportation service for all ages provided by the Steuben County Council on Aging. Whether you're heading to a medical appointment, grocery store, school, or social event, STAR is here to get you there—safely and affordably.

We provide door-to-door service throughout Steuben County and beyond, including:

How to Schedule a Ride
Call us at (260) 665-9856 at least 24 hours in advance.
Dispatch hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Please have the following ready:
• Your name and phone number
• Pickup and drop-off addresses
• Desired pickup time
• Return trip details (if needed)
Fares & Donations
General Public: Affordable rates based on mileage
Seniors 60+: Rides are donation-based within Steuben County
Companions: Ride free when accompanying a qualified rider
Children: $4.00 one way when accompanied by an adult
Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, except for school transportation. Please call the office for school-age transportation arrangements.
In-County Rates (One Way):
• 0–5 miles: $4.00
• 5–10 miles: $8.00
• 10–15 miles: $12.00
• 15+ miles: $16.00
Out-of-County Rates:
• $1.50 per mile
Prepaid Punch Cards:
• Purchase at the office or from drivers
• $48 value for $40
• Non-refundable
We accept cash or check at the time of service.
Service Animals
Service animals are welcome to accompany individuals with disabilities. Please notify the dispatcher when scheduling your trip.
Guidelines:
• Animals must not block exits or ride on seats
• They may use the lift only if their handler does
• Animals may be excluded if they pose a direct threat to others
Late Cancellation & No-Show Policy
To ensure fair and efficient service, STAR has a policy for handling late cancellations and no-shows. Repeated violations may result in temporary suspension of service.
An appeals process is available for suspended riders. Please contact our office for full policy details.
Accessibility & Assistance
All STAR vehicles are wheelchair accessible, and our drivers are trained to assist riders with mobility needs. Let us know if you need help getting to or from your door.

STAR Public Transportation is pleased to provide prompt, efficient and friendly service to anyone, any age in Steuben County.

The safety of our passengers, community and drivers is our top priority. All vehicles are ADA assessable and inspected regularly. Drivers are trained and certified per FTA and Federal requirements.

We kindly ask that passengers are ready 15 minutes before their scheduled time. To adhere to the schedule, drivers will wait only 5 minutes for a passenger before proceeding to the next stop. Please call if a van has not arrived to pick you up within 15 minutes of your scheduled appointment.

Cancellations must be reported in advance to avoid potential cancellation fees.

STAR is closed in observation of the following holidays: New Years Eve, New Years Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & the day after, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Fares

Fares are person based on one way trips. Please note that Steuben County residents age 60 and older can ride STAR within Steuben County for a donation.
