History

Our Journey Through the Years

- 1960-1968: The Beginning

The Steuben County Senior Center was formed, adopting its first constitution and bylaws. A leadership team was elected, and the mission was set: to address the challenges of aging, collaborate with state and federal legislators, and serve as a central hub for seniors. The first official meeting was recorded during this time.

- 1975: Official Incorporation

On May 15, 1975, the Steuben County Council on Aging, Inc. was officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The organization opened its first office and hired its inaugural Executive Director.

- 1992: A New Home

SCCOA relocated to a larger space in the basement of the County Community Building. This move allowed for the launch of senior programs and the creation of the Activity Center, offering regular opportunities for engagement and enrichment.

- 2008: Launch of STAR Public Transportation

In partnership with the County Commissioners and INDOT, SCCOA introduced STAR Public Transportation, providing accessible transit options for all Steuben County residents.

- 2015: Campaign for a New Facility

A capital campaign was launched to find a new, more accessible location. The first fundraiser raised $5,000, marking the beginning of a community-driven effort to expand our reach.

-2019: Groundbreaking for the Future

Thanks to the generosity of the Sheets and Trine families, and support from the community, SCCOA acquired land and funding for a new facility. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in October 2019, and the foundation was poured in December.

- 2020: A Dream Realized

In August 2020, SCCOA and STAR Transportation moved into their new home on Wohlert Street. The facility was named The Heritage Club, and membership grew from 80 to over 500 in just six months.
